The Greatest?

In Keeping with O'Connell's stress for non-violence, GT12 wants to feature "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" the song considered by many to be the greatest anti-war song of all time.

I first heard this 20th century song of Australian origin in 1978 in an Irish bar. There are many recorded versions. I have performed it formally and informally hundreds of times since.

The song details the Battle of Gallipoli and Suvla Bay during WW I and more importantly the blind patriotism that fortified the warriors before the battle and the disillusionment that has eaten away at them since.

Thousands of ill prepared Australian and New Zealand soldiers were sacrificed through stupidity and incompetence.

Timely, no?

This version by the Clancy Brothers gets the point across.
