People Who Go To Twelve

His voice, a cross between Hank Williams’ mournful bay and George Jones’ steely resignation, encompasses all of America. His Band opens Emmy Lou Harris shows with brilliant essays in electrified Appalachia, then comes back on stage with the star replicating her dark, Daniel Lanois produced U2-goes-Americana journeys into the Heartland’s soul. He can pick with the best of the Nashville Flash-boys, while never sounding like them. He has the strangest damn guitars you’ll ever see. He has sung Otis Redding. He has written a great song about landmines (and, let’s face it, protest music isn’t often great) And on his new album, he aims for nothing less than rescuing Christ from the Old-Testament-obsessed Psuedo-Christianity of the Religious right. Amen. Buddy Miller is a Higher Power.
