The survey shows the challenges that lie ahead for both candidates. For Obama, it's white men and white suburban women. He trails McCain by 20 percentage points among white men, but is at a smaller disadvantage, 6 percentage points behind, among white suburban women. For McCain, it's overcoming President Bush's low approval ratings. More than half of those surveyed, 54 percent, said they want a president who would bring greater changes to current policies, even if that person is less experienced and tested. Just 42 percent say they'd prefer a more experienced and tested president.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was conducted June 6-9 and involved telephone interviews with 1,000 registered voters. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
